Results of the 2014 ECOSOC Elections

29 October 2014

This morning, the General Assembly met in plenary to elect 18 members of the Economic and Social Council.  Argentina, Austria, Brazil, Burkina Faso, Estonia, France, Germany, Ghana, Greece, Honduras, India, Japan, Mauritania, Pakistan, Portugal, Trinidad and Tobago, Uganda, and Zimbabwe were elected for a three year term, which will begin on the 1st of January 2015.

As anticipated, longstanding ECOSOC members France, Germany, and Japan retained their seats for another term.  Austria, Brazil, Burkina Faso, Greece, India, and Portugal were also re-elected members.

Indeed, only half of the member states elected this morning did not serve on the Council during the previous term. They are Argentina, Estonia, Ghana, Honduras, Mauritania, Pakistan, Trinidad and Tobago, Uganda, and Zimbabwe.

In addition to these changes, it is anticipated that Australia, Finland, and Switzerland will also join ECOSOC in 2015 due to regional agreements within the WEOG.  They will replace Canada, Denmark, and New Zealand, respectively.

In order to be elected to ECOSOC, member states required votes from two thirds of the member states present and voting.  Below, please find an account of the number of votes received by each member state.
