Issue 6 - 30 November 2006- Ban Ki-moon To Be Sworn In 14 December, Will Then Announce Undersecretaries-General
New York, 30 November 2006 – Ban Ki-moon reportedly will be sworn into office as the next UN Secretary-General on Thursday, 14 December 2006. He officially will take office on 1 January 2007.
Since arriving in New York on 16 November, Mr. Ban has been holding meetings with the outgoing Secretary-General, the President of the General Assembly, the regional groups of UN Member States, and candidates for his management and advisory team including the undersecretaries-general and the deputy secretary-general.
Ban has the option of either selecting an entirely new team or requesting members of outgoing Secretary-General Kofi Annan’s team to stay, although most of those officials have contracts that will end in December 2006 or January 2007.
He is expected to announce the appointments during the last two weeks of December. According to one UN source, he has decided to appoint a woman to the position of Deputy Secretary-General. It is still unknown whom he is considering or which region the candidate would represent.
